Stockport men spared jail after farmer dies under roller-shutter doors - April 18th 2013

Robert Ireland, 71, of Manor Wold Farm in East Heslerton, North Yorkshire, died from multiple injuries at his farm when a recently-fitted roller-shutter door fell from its mountings.

A court heard that Paul Halliwell, of Beaufort Road, Stockport, who has since wound up his company Easydoor, admitted a single charge under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. Fitter David Whittaker, of Bradley Green Road, Hyde, also pleaded guilty to one charge under the same legislation.

The accident happened when Mr Ireland tried to open the door. It fell 14ft to the ground from its mountings, pinning him underneath.
The HSE found that the door fell because there was a mismatch between the length of the door barrel and the distance between the supporting brackets.

Bradford shopkeeper pleads to keep roller shutters - January 12th 2013

The city council of Bradford have ordered a shop owner to remove high-security roller shutters because they ‘breach planning regulations’ fears it will mean the end of his livelihood if he’s to take them down.

But council officials have said that they breach planning regulations and have ordered them to be removed. Mr Dmitarjbul then went through the proper planning process only for planning permission to be turned down.

Mr Dmitarjbul said: “If I take the shutters down I will not have any security and may as well open every door and let them rob me blind.”

Shutters slow down bungling trio who failed to raid a cash machine - November 12th 2012

BUNGLING raiders failed to break into a bank cash machine. The hooded trio forced their way into the Whitchurch Halifax in the early hours and set about the ATM with cutting gear, Bristol Crown Court was told.

After causing £9,000 damage the flummoxed three left empty-handed, but police found John Clouter's blood on the inside of forced roller shutters.

Peter Coombe, prosecuting, said at around 3.30am on September 13 the Halifax intruder alarm activated and police arrived on the scene in three minutes. He said: "The roller shutters were forced open, the window was broken and when police went inside they saw the back of the ATM had been damaged."

Traders asked to think twice about security shutters - November 07th 2012

Owners of businesses in Boston are being warned that if they have not sought the necessary planning permission then they are encouraged not to risk wasting money on new steel security shutters for their premises.

Boston Borough Council has recently had to halt work at two shops where roller shutters were being installed without permission, and even worse, on one shop the shutters have since been removed.

Councillor Derek Richmond, of Boston Borough Council said "The council does understand that shop keepers might be worried about how they secure their stock so officers are on hand to advise on the numerous types of measures that could be available – some without needing planning permission."

"We don't want the town centre to begin to look as if it is closed for business – it needs to remain attractive, encouraging and safe at all times of the day and night."

Newport shop on the brink of bankruptcy after theft of £20k of fireworks - October 19th 2012

Forty-eight boxes of fireworks including rockets, and boxes called “cakes” which fire out multiple fireworks were stolen from Newport Mascots and Party Supplies in Pill in the early hours of Monday morning.

Mrs Holland, who has run the business for more than two years, said: "I fell to my knees when I saw what they’d done. "I don’t normally work on a Monday but I came in to do some paperwork. I opened the shutters and I just saw stuff everywhere. They had trashed the shop.
"I bought some of the fireworks on credit so I have an £8,500 bill to pay by November 15 or that’s it, it will bankrupt the shop.

It said some of the signs added "considerable visual clutter, contributing in many cases to a low rent feel".

Rundle Mall's 'low rent feel' upsets Adelaide City Council - October 19th 2012

THE Adelaide City Council says some Rundle Mall shopfronts give the precinct a very "low rent feel". The criticism is published in a new council booklet of guidelines for owners and tenants covering issues such as lights, signs and shopfront displays.
